Greetings, as you may have guessed, my second name is indeed Barbary, I am in Australia (Adelaide, South Australia).
As far as I am aware, the branch of the family to which I belong derives from a group of miners who emigrated from Cornwall to a town called Moonta in South Australia. A lot of them got sick and died through diseases caused by poor sanitation (typhoid, dysentery and the like) and there are a number of Barbarys buried in the Moonta cemetary.
Have you heard the tale about how the Barbary name got to Cornwall? It may be far fetched but I'll relay it anyway. As you are no doubt aware, Barbary pirates once roamed the Spanish main, the tale goes that one of their vessels was venturing into English waters off Cornwall, and local villagers lit bonfires on the rocks to look like the old safety beacons they used back then, needless to say their ship was ruined and the occupants washed upon the rocks, the local villagers were going about the business of cutting the throats of the survivors when a young Cornish lass found one of the pirates washed up on the beach, she poised her dagger to do him in but couldn't bring herself to do it, legend goes that she fell in love with the pirate and they lived happily ever after. As I say, it may be far fetched but still a nice story (There is a rude version, but I won't bother with that at this time).
I understand that when the Barbarys from Cornwall emigrated to Australia, others of the same group went to the Americas, possibly Canada, I'm afraid I can't provide you with dates other than to say some time in the mid 1800's.
