I can add a little to this, as I am doing research on the Johnston family because I believe they owned slaves who were descendants of my husband. Peter Johnston (Sr.?) immigrated from Scotland and arrived Prince Edward County in 1750. He had three sons. The eldest was Peter, who I believe was the father of Joseph E. Johnston, the civil war general. The middle son was Charles, who built an estate called Sandusky in Lynchburg (www.historicsandusky.org/Johnston.htm). The youngest son is not named in the Charles Johnston biography. Apparently Charles wrote quite a bit of material about his adventures as a land speculator in 1790. Charles married Elizabeth Steptoe and had a son named James Steptoe Johnston. James moved to Mississippi before 1834 and had plantations in MS and Louisiana. My husband's great-grandfather Thomas Johnson was a slave on the LA plantation, and possibly the MS plantation as well. Since Thomas' parents were born in VA, it is a good bet they were owned by the VA Johnstons and made the migration to Mississippi with son James.
Joseph Eggleston Johnston also had at least one brother Charles Clement Johnston, who was elected a Jacksonian to the 22nd Congress.
Hope that helps. Please let me know if you find any further information about this family, as the white families are typically the only links or way we have to research African-Americans.
