My branch of the family come from Staffordshire; great-grandfather,Jonah (1833); grandfather,
Samuel(1874). They moved to Darlington in the 1880's to work in the steel mills.I understand that the name derives,either from a Norman French
word meaning young, or from the Welsh ap Ievens, a form of Evans. Our pronunciation rhymes with Evans; I don't know if this is the norm.
