Jaroslav Roman Babiak was one of my best friends but was taken by cancer in 1998. He may be the same fellow you knew. He was 50 when he passed away.
According to Roman, his entire immediate family had died before him, of cancer too I believe, so I think he expected to die young. I believe he had one niece or cousin who came (I believe she was in NY at the time) out to Palo Alto, CA, where Roman was living, for his memorial service.
He was a great guy, one of the nicest guys I've ever known, and very funny, and there was a write up about him in the Los Angeles "Avatar Meher Baba" group's quarterly newsletter, which I do graphic design work for. Roman was very active in the group. He had lived in Chicago before, and I'm not sure where he grew up but Toledo does seem to ring a bell.
